BC Brownfield Renewal Funding Program

The BC Brownfield Renewal Funding Program 2013 intake is open.

The BC Brownfield Renewal Funding Program (the Program) is designed to help to revitalize inactive or unused lands across British Columbia by reducing the risk and uncertainty normally associated with these types of sites. The Program will contribute funding to land owners or developers for environmental investigations and related activities on brownfield sites where market forces have not achieved redevelopment and where it is possible to achieve triple-bottom-line benefits.

Tax exemptions in British Columbia

Did you know that Revitalization Tax Exemptions can be used to encourage brownfield redevelopment with tax exemptions for up to 10 years?

The Community Charter provides all local governments with the ability to offer revitalization tax exemptions. The Ministry of Community Development has published a primer document for local governments on the revitalization tax exemption tool. §226 of the Community Charter, which enables the Revitalization Tax Exemption tool for local governments.

This tax exemption tool can will help encourage brownfield private redevelopment by allowing local governments to offer tax exemptions for up to 10 years on properties meeting certain criteria, of which brownfield redevelopments fall into.

Similar provisions to the Community Charter on revitalization tax exemptions revitalizing brownfield lands are contained in the Vancouver Charter for as they apply to the City of Vancouver.

Green Municipal Fund

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) offers grants and low interest loans to Canadian municipal governments; private-sector companies or corporations wholly owned by a municipal government may also be eligible, if they are partners in eligible municipal projects.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund™ (GMF) is a unique program that supports municipal initiatives across Canada that benefit the environment, local economies and quality of life.

Green Municipal Fund grants and below-market loans directly support municipal initiatives, while GMF education and training resources help municipal governments share expertise and strengthen their ability to set and surpass their sustainable goals.

The Government of Canada endowed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) with $550 million to establish GMF.

Real Estate Foundation of BC Grant

The Real Estate Foundation of BC provides funding to non-profit organizations for public and professional education, research and law reform, for projects that focus on aligning resources resources and leading learning related to sustainable land use projects.

Funding for use of new technology

A federal fund is available directly to private organizations involved in remediation and green building technology development is the SD Tech Fund from Sustainable Development Technology Canada. This fund is designed to bridge the innovation gap and does not require an equity stake or ownership of intellectual property.

BC Brownfield Renewal encourages companies in British Columbia pursuing green technologies related to brownfield redevelopment to investigate this funding program as a means to help realize commercial technologies and "made in British Columbia" solutions to brownfield remediation and green building.
